For more than 20 years, Canada and the United States have had the “Safe Third Country Agreement” which operates on the principle that a person claiming refugee status must do so in the first safe country in which they arrive.
What a shit show! It's hard to believe that so many Americans are okay with this. I keep hoping that the State Governors that have not lost their minds and hearts keep pushing back! They are the only hope....
And one last thing. Boy cost American products as much as possible. There are plenty of Canadian and other alternatives. E.g.: I eat an orange every morning, but I have long avoided Florida oranges in favour of Spanish and Moroccan oranges and other citrus fruit. I plan to systematically avoid Made in the U.S. products from now on, even when it means going without them.
And by the way, Colombia DID NOT back down. Trump wanted to deport them shckled hand and foot to the floor of 2 US military planes. Whatever Gustavo Petro said in riposte to the US President, the video of the deportees arriving, free of shackles or any form of restraint, by passenger planes tells the story. Colombia has accepted deportees in the past with no problem (including from deporter-in-chief Barak Obama). What Pétrologies was insisting on was DIGNITAD for the Columbian citizens being deported. Looks like he won that.
It never was. It has always been a bully. The global south and the PMs of Canada (and aspiring PMs, think of John Turner) who stood up to the bully south of the border understood it all too well.
