"Liking" such a post is extremely troubling. The threats laid out about democracy are truly frightening. It can happen here - if Maple MAGA is not stopped in its tracks. Remember that the Parti Québécois held the levers of power when they manipulated the 1995 referendum, mercifully not completely successfully, and were able to avoid full investigation of the dirty tricks they played. Focus has always been on the missteps of the No side - the huge rally, Bill Clinton's comments, etc. But there were much more nefarious deeds on the Yes side.

From https://canadaehx.com/2022/01/28/thomas-mulcair/:

During the 1995 referendum, Mulcair was a vocal opponent to the separation of Quebec from Canada.

He would demand an inquiry over allegations of the rejection of thousands of ballots for the No side. In his own riding, 5,450 votes were rejected. Mulcair would state that the Yes side had orchestrated and manipulated electoral fraud. He would state that in his riding, a dozen No side workers were ordered to reject ballots for several reasons, including the X being too dark or too light. Mulcair would state quote:

“I have no hesitation in saying that this was orchestrated, manipulated electoral fraud. It’s obvious there was a pattern of abuse.”

The issue of alleged referendum voter fraud would continue for several years, with Mulcair at the front of it. In 1998, he would state that the electoral law should be amended to remove the word fraudulent, which had caused issues in the courts over whether or not the electoral officer had failed to prove that two deputy returning officers had an intent to commit voter fraud.

You may enjoy reading https://tadstoermer.substack.com/

It takes away some of the mythology built around the alleged "differences" between the Confederate States and the United States. There is so much finger pointing to those that "lost", and not enough inspection of the actual formation of that republic.

I know for many this goes too far, but I see quite a bit of similarities between all 3 regions on this continent that different Angloshpere governments claim title to (whether or not specific separatists "won" or "lost"). I wish these (Western European ideologically) Westphalian governments were as different as the mythology claims they are.
